Free Personal Finance Course 2020

If you want to brush up on your financial IQ or learn the basics of investing, then I’ve got a solid resource to share with you.

My friend Jimmy (my co-host from The Come Up Podcast) told me about a free online personal finance course, so I decided to check it out.

I’m glad I did.

Here’s the link: McGill Personal Finance Essentials

Since I’ve already had a chance to go through the material I’ll share my thoughts.

Great Lessons for Everyday People

For starters, the course material is taught by professors from McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management school of business. So, you are learning from professional teachers.

The Personal Finance Essentials course covers the following topics:

  • Debt and it’s many forms

  • The Time Value of Money

  • Strategic Budgeting

  • The Basics of Investing

  • Real Estate

  • Behavioural Finance

At the end of each module, you are given a 10-question quiz to gauge your understanding.

The quizzes aren’t hard - They’re not supposed to be. You’re not trying to earn a degree. They want you to be able to apply what you’ve learned to manage your money better. I think the material does a good job of that.

Low Time Commitment

The curriculum is broken up into 8 modules. Each containing two or three short videos averaging about 5-10 minutes apiece.

I like short videos that get straight to the point, so this course was perfect for me. It was easy to squeeze in a lesson or two during my son’s 30-min afternoon nap, which helped.

While the course is self-paced, it is not open year-round. There are four sessions scheduled for 2020. If you’ve missed the boat try joining the wait-list and join the next round when registration reopens.

Good Overall Experience

The instructors teach using simple examples to make the information digestible. And the videos are annotated with helpful animations to support your learning.

You can’t ask for much more from a free course.

It’s worth taking the time to look at the material, even if you watch all of the videos on 1.5x speed and just skim through for a quick refresher.

Hopefully, you find some value in it. If so, don’t be afraid to pass it along.
